House Guest Charged with Larceny

There are 85,000 stories in the Oyster City. Here are several of them (unrelated) from the weekend's police files.

When a Norwalk man and woman who met Carlos Vidal at the Black Bear Saloon on Washington Street Saturday invited him back to their house, it must've seemed like the right thing to do at the time.

But when the man woke up in the morning to find Vidal gone, also missing were an IBM laptop and cell phone. The couple called police at 10:02 a.m., Sunday.

Police said that at 11:13 a.m. they spotted Vidal, 25, driving past a stop sign on Hanford Place without stopping, and they took him into custody. According to the couple, Vidal said he was from Bridgeport, but police listed his address as 56 1/2 Main St., Norwalk.

Neither the laptop nor the cell phone were found on Vidal or in his car.

Charged with driving while intoxicated—and armed while intoxicated

Police charged a 41-year-old Norwalk man with driving while intoxicated after a traffic accident in the wee hours of Sunday. Then, police said, they found he was also intoxicated while armed with a pistol.

Police gave this account:

At 2:23 a.m., at the corner of Washington and North Main streets, a Cadillac Escalade driven by Daryl Johnson came into contact with the back end of a Lincoln Town Car. The driver of the Town Car told police he was experiencing neck pain, but he declined the services of an ambulance and said he would see a doctor.

A police officer first noticed the smell of alcohol while walking over to Johnson, who was sitting in his car. The smell became stronger as the officer approached, and the officer reported that the odor was not only on Johnson's breath, but "on his person."

Johnson, eyes blooshot and watery, was hanging out of his car window, the officer reported, but didn't respond to questioning until the officer shook him. When asked if he was all right, Johnson stared for a while and then said that he was.

When Johnson got out of the car, he had difficulty standing, and he failed a field sobriety test. Police found a .32-caliber Barretta pistol on him with one round in the chamber. The gun was legally registered to Johnson, but he didn't have a permit with him.

Johnson, of 16 Ave. D, was charged with carrying a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, carrying a gun without a permit, driving while intoxicated, failure to carry an insurance identification card and following too close.

One difficult arrest

A police officer was both punched in the face and injured his hand while arresting Lee Marcel, 40, of Bridgeport near 11 Fort Point St. Sunday night.

Police gave this account:

Police went to the address on a report of a distrubance at 11:28 p.m. A 45-year-old Norwalk woman said she had been assaulted by Marcel, whom she had been dating. She said he grabbed her by the face and had started choking her.

Police saw she had scratches and redness on her chest and arms. The woman said Marcel attacked her. He denied it.

Police tried to handcuff Marcel to take him into custody when he broke away and ran off. An officer grabbed him, and Marcel began to punch and kick the officer. He was wrestled to the ground, but he violently resisted efforts to get him under control.

At one point, Marcel punched Police Officer Justin Bisceglie in the face. Bisceglie's right hand was also injured when it was pressed against a guy wire from a telephone pole. When Marcel continued to try to kick police officers, another officer warned him he would be tased if he continued. He did continue and was tased.

Lee was charged with third-degree assault, interfering with a police officer, second-degree breach of peace, assault on a police officer and second-degree strangulation.
