Fatal Merritt Parkway Car Accident In Fairfield

State police are investigating a one-car fatal accident in the southbound lane of travel on the Merritt Parkway.

State Police Lieutenant. J. Paul Vance confirmed the fatal accident that occurred at about 11:25 a.m just south of exit 44. 

Vance said the car, an Acura TSX, struck a tree. 

"Troopers are out there now. They will examine the scene, gather evidence and determine what happened," Vance said of the accident, which happened about an hour ago in the area of the Connecticut Audubon Society at Larsen Sanctuary.

Two state police officers where investigating the concrete median in the center of the highway under the Burr Street overpass shortly after the wreck in search of possible evidence. 

Traffic remains backed up as one lane of travel is closed.
