DUI, Speeding Charges for 23-Year-Old Man

Written by David Gurliacci

A 33-year-old man was charged by Darien police Sunday with driving while under the influence of alcohol and speeding.

Police gave this account (an accusation not proven in court) of the matter:

At about 1:30 a.m. an officer using a radar device clocked a 2009 Toyota Tacoma speeding northbound at 46 mph on Hoyt Street near Country Club Road. The street is in a 30 mph zone at that point.

When the officer stopped the car and spoke with the driver, Joseph Lumento of Sier Hill Road in Norwalk, the officer smelled the strong odor of cologne, "which is, in our experience, (often) an effort to conceal the odor of alcohol," said Detective Mark Cappelli at a Darien Police news briefing.

Lumento failed a field sobriety test and admitted to police that he drank about a six pack of beer.

He was arrested and held on a $250 bond, which he posted later that night. Lumento is scheduled to appear July 31 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
