DUI Checkpoints: Norwalk, New Canaan Teaming Up
Police officers from the two towns will be increasing enforcement Saturday through St. Patrick's Day.
Norwalk and New Canaan police officers are teaming up this weekend to make the roads safer.
The two departments are joining forces to conduct DUI checkpoints on Saturday, March 15, as part of a regional traffic enforcement initiative.
"The officers will be focusing their efforts on removing from the roadway vehicles driven by people who are driving under the influence of alcohol, or drugs, to reduce the number of crashes, injuries and fatalities in Norwalk," according to a press release announcing the checkpoints.

Additional police officers will also be working on St. Patrick’s Day — Monday, March 17 — specifically for DUI enforcement.
According to the release from Norwalk Police, the most recent reporting period showed that 67% of DUI crashes occur during the weekend days. In Connecticut, the percentage of alcohol related fatalities (43%) was higher than the national average (36%).

"This St. Patrick’s Day weekend please drink responsibly," the release states. "Pick a designated driver if you are going to be out drinking."
The motor vehicle check point is made possible by a grant from the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles Highway Safety Office.
