Couple In Car Robbed by Man Requesting Directions

Puts gun to man's head; flees when victim attempts to knock it out of his hand.

A couple in a car was robbed at gunpoint Monday night by a man who flagged them down, claiming he needed directions.

The pair, a female driver and male passenger, were near the intersection of Soundview Avenue and Glasser Street when they encountered the man standing by the side of the road waving to get their attention.

The man requested directions to a location neither of them recognized, so the male brought out his iPhone to search for it. At that point the man put a gun to the male's head and demanded his property and money.

According to police spokesman Lt. Praveen John, the male gave the man his phone and less than $100 cash.

The man then ordered the female to do the same. She told the man he didn't need her stuff, John said, because they weren't going to call the police. At that point, her passenger attempted to knock the gun out of the man's hand, resulting in him turning and running away.

John said they spent a short amount of time looking for the robber before returning home and contacting police.
