Beware: Unlicensed Mechanic Approaching Residents on Conn Ave

The most recent complainant told Norwalk police that the suspect promised to fix her car for $280, but ran off with the money, according to Officer Steven Jaeger.

Norwalk police are looking for a New Haven man who has been approaching motorists on Connecticut Avenue and offering to fix their cars without a proper license, according to Officer Steven Jaeger.

The department received a complaint on March 11 from a 27 year-old resident, who said that she was approached by a man in the parking lot of Best Buy and told her that he could fix her car, Jaeger said. When she told him that she got a $1,200 quote from a repair shop, the man told her that he could do the same repairs for $280.

After she gave him the cash, the man then told the complainant that he had to temporarily leave the lot for supplies. The complainant asked for his cell phone number, which called to make sure was valid, in case he didn't return. But according to Jaeger, he didn't.

The complainant described the man as being between 40 and 50 years old with dark, short hair. He was wearing a cream colored sweater with blue jeans and he was unshaven.

After tracing the phone number, Jaeger said that he discovered that the suspect aleady has pending cases for driving with a suspended license and attempting to fix vehicles without a proper license, including an incident in 2008 when he was caught with two other men attempting to fix dents on a car in the parking lot of Circuit City.

The department is warning residents to steer clear of anyone that approaches them and offters to fix their vehicles on Connecticut Ave. Anyone with information about the suspect is encouraged to contact the department.
