Parents Talk: Is it Better to Wait a Year for Kindergarten?

Patch Parents Council debates another hot topic. Please feel free to weigh in in our comments section below.

This week's topic is kindergarten and whether to hold back or send a child to kindergarten even if he or she might be younger than the majority of the class.

With all the summer and fall-born babies out there, what do you think is the best thing for parents to do? Does it hurt children or set them up to fail if they are sent to kindergarten too soon? What was your experience and what do you think other parents should keep in mind?

If your kids aren't quite ready for kindergarten, how are you preparing them for preschool and what are your thoughts about sending them to kindergarten early if they are younger than the rest of their peers?

Patch's new feature, "Parents Talk," is meant to help build a community of support for families in Fairfield County through active discussion of important issues.

Each week, we'll introduce a new topic and hope you'll participate in the conversation, which will be moderated and furthered by select parent council representatives in your town.

Please use the comment box below for questions, or to share your experiences and the lessons you have learned. Please also submit questions or topics for future discussions to Associate Regional Editor Liz Mitchell at liz@patch.com and Regional Editor Michael Dinan at michaeld@patch.com.

And if you'd like to join our parent council, let us know.
