Hundreds of colleagues, friends and relatives paid their final respects Wednesday to Greenwich Police Sgt. Roger A. Petrone Jr.

In a heavy snow squall, dozens of officers lined Bruce Place — usually referred to Police Alley, outside Greenwich Police headquarters where the funeral procession and hearse carrying Sgt. Petrone stopped for a final salute from dozens of officers gave a final salute before heading to St. Mary Church on Greenwich Avenue for the funeral Mass.

A lone bagpiper played while Sgt. Petrone's colleagues, town officials including First Selectman Peter Tesei and Selectman Dave Theis, and representatives from Greenwich Emergency Medical Service, New Canaan and Stamford Police departments and the Turn of River Fire Department of Stamford, stood at attention.

The 44-year-old Sgt. Petrone passed away Feb. 20 after a six-and-a-half-year battle with ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. Before becoming a Greenwich Police officer in 1994, he worked as a dispatcher for Stamford Police. He also was a member of the Turn of River Fire Department. He was a 1988 graduate of Darien High School, where he was captain of the wrestling team and a member of the football team.

His survivors include his daughter Sydney, her mother Denise; his mother and step-father Patricia and Walter Humphrey; his brother Robert Petrone and two nieces Kaia and Kelcie Petrone, and step-brother Scott Humphrey of Stamford. He was predeceased by his father Roger Petrone Sr.
