Obituary: John "Jack" "Papa Jack" Thomas Goggins, 87

Friends are invited to call Saturday from 9:30-10:30 am at Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Avenue, Norwalk. A mass of Christian burial will be at St. Philip Church, 1 Father Conlon Place, Norwalk, at 11:00 am.

John “Jack” “Papa Jack” Thomas Goggins, age 87, longtime resident of Norwalk, for over 80 years passed away on Saturday October 5, 2013.

Jack was surrounded by his family at his present home residing with his loving daughter and her adoring family for the past year and a half. Jack was born in Great Neck, Long Island September 3, 1926. He moved to Norwalk, CT at the age of 5. Jack was the son of the late James P. Goggins and Julia Carroll Goggins, and brother of James Goggins.

For many years he and his family lived on the grounds of the Mathews Mansion Estate, Norwalk, in the caretaker’s house. His father was head gardener and caretaker of the Mathews Estate grounds.

Jack was predeceased by his wife June Peterson Goggins.

Jack was a property agent for the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation. He was proud to have worked his way up from the maintenance department and was a faithful employee for 45 years.

He attended Saint Mary’s grade school and graduated from Norwalk High School in 1945. He remained a devout parishioner of Saint Mary’s Church during his residence in Norwalk; in later years he was head usher forSunday mass. 

Jack will be remembered for his kind, gentle, and good natured personality; his great sense of humor and corny jokes; and his wonderful smile. His biggest pleasure in life was his family and longtime friend Julie Hussey.

He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Steven Najarian, grandchildren Shaun, Britany, and Rachel; son Peter and daughter-in-law Linda Goggins, grandchildren Peter John and Brandon, and two great grandchildren.

Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Norwalk. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Connecticut Chapter of the Alzhemier’s Association at 2075 Silas Deane Highway Suit 100, Rocky Hill CT 06067 or www.alz.org/CT.
