Henry Herbert, 84, Ran Herbert Fuel, Volunteer Firefighter

Henry Herbert was a Noroton Fire Department volunteer, active in the Darien Rotary Club, the United Way, the Darien Power Squadron and played hockey, golf and bowled.

Henry Frazer Herbert, age 84, of Darien and Naples, Florida, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2014.

The father of Frazier Herbert of Rowayton was a member of the Shorehaven Golf Club in Norwalk.

He was born in Brooklyn, NY, on April 23, 1929.  His family moved to Darien when he was 11 years old.  He attended Hindley School and graduated from Darien High School in 1947. 

Henry was the former President of the Herbert Fuel Corporation and was a founding partner of Sound Energy Corporation of Darien with his son.  In addition, he was for many years a director of the Connecticut Petroleum Association and the New England Fuel Institute.
 
Henry was an active member of the Darien community.  He was a member of the Noroton Fire Department for over 50 years, a charter member and past vice president of the Darien Rotary Club, a chairman and fundraiser for the United Way, a past director of the Darien Power Squadron, and a member of the Darien Disaster Committee and Darien High School Business Board.
 
Henry was honored by the Darien Old Timers Athletic Association for both his personal and corporate participation in Darien sports.  He earned awards as both a Blue Wave football and hockey player. 

After graduating, Henry remained active in sports, playing for local hockey teams Yale & Town and the Home Oilers.  He coached Darien Youth Hockey House and Travel Teams for 10 years. He was a sponsor for Darien Little League, Softball and Babe Ruth Teams, as well as hockey and bowling leagues.
 
Henry was married for 62 years to the former Doris Edgar of Darien.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four daughters and son: Janet Glazer (Charles) of Greenwich, Lauren Banerjee (Ravi), Bebe Fisher (John), and Carol Herbert all of Darien, and Frazer Herbert (Victoria) of Rowayton as well as his 12 grandchildren.
 
Henry was a long-time member of the Darien Boat Club and the Windstar Golf Club in Naples.  He enjoyed golfing throughout his years and among his most memorable accomplishments were two hole-in-ones.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday March 19, 2014  from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home at  2119 Post Rd., Darien.
