College Tour visits home of Carver's namesake, George Washington Carver, Tuskegee University

By Carver students Danielle Civil and Kayla Roberson

As the rain poured heavily on the windshield of our chartered bus, so many of us sent a private prayer in the hopes of a bus tour instead of the traditional walking tour. Our prayers were answered when our student guide hopped on the bus and rallied our group. He explained that Tuskegee Institute is a private, Historically Black College and University that was founded July 4, 1881 by Booker T. Washington. It sits on 5,000 acres of land and has been designated as the Tuskegee Institute National Historic National Site, a National Historic Landmark. This campus consists of about 3,100 students. Tuskegee has a rich history with the well-known Tuskegee Airmen and the work of George Washington Carver. Both Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver are buried here.

The George Washington Carver Community Center recently celebrated 75 years of helping the people of Norwalk. It was named after the famous scientist George Washington Carver who did most of his work at Tuskegee.

We are currently on the Carver’s 44th Annual College Tour, which is a program of the Carver’s Youth Development Program and began in 1970. We learned that Tuskegee has a yearlong celebration for the 150th birthday of George Washington Carver. He is known as one of America’s greatest scientists.  I learned that he was the one responsible for reviving agriculture in the south by finding different ways to use peanuts. We were so intrigued by his work and learned that a Museum bearing his name was recently renovated. By the time our bus tour ended the Museum was closed for the day. I imagined being inspired by the many displays that are available in his honor.

In order to get accepted into the university, a student should score a 21 on the ACTs, score a 1,000 on the reading and math parts of the SATs, and have a 3.0 GPA or higher. The school uses superscore on the SATs too, in order to increase the chances for a student to get accepted. Tuskegee is the top producer of African American engineers, and has one of the top veterinary programs in the nation. Its Band is exceptional. It also has four libraries, an on-campus hotel, and a university chapel.
