Carver students on College Tour visit Auburn University

By Celina Hunter and Kayla Louis, Norwalk High School students

Arriving on the campus of Auburn University was like entering the compound of a modern-day estate.  Many buildings had contemporary architectural designs. As dozens of students hurried across the lawn, I could not help imaging myself hurrying across the lawn to my classes. Auburn is one of the favorites among my peers. But there were several students who realized that Auburn would not be a reality for them due to the high academic requirements. One of my classmates who is a junior felt he should have been a more disciplined student.

Tim Cook, who is the current CEO of Apple is an Auburn Alumnus and so is Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer from ”The Help”, who is also a graduate of Auburn.

Auburn University was established in 1856, as a male college and operated as such until 1872.  Auburn is now a vibrant co-ed institution known for the advancement of Science and Art. Auburn has 140 different majors, 60 faculty-led study aboard opportunities, and 400 clubs/organizations.  Eighty percent of the classes have 40 students or less and a staff-to-student ratio of 1 to 18. Out-of-state tuition at Auburn is $26,364, including all fees. Auburn has more opportunities for scholarships than any other school that we have visited thus far. One example is the Presidential Scholarship. Qualifying students will have scored a 33 – 36 on the ACT and a cumulative score of 1440 – 1600 on your SAT, plus a 3.5 GPA weighted average.

Housing for freshman is one of the challenges, so if you are considering Auburn you should get your $200 deposit to reserve your room. Although we did not physically see the inside of the dormitory, my classmates were in awe when photos of the dormitory were displayed. The accommodations are magnificent. There are the traditional room and community bathroom and suite styles living with four private rooms and two bathrooms.
