One Million Moms for Gun Control Protesting Stamford Gun Show

Saturday's "East Coast Fine Arms Show" in Stamford is too soon after massacre.

The majority of Mothers of America made a promise after Newtown that we would not move on again from another mass shooting without action. We must join together to say that this is not acceptable: not in this community, and not now.

— Shannon Watts, founder of One Million Moms for Gun Control

The non-profit organization One Million Moms for Gun Control is urging organizers of the East Coast Fine Arms Show to cancel its event this weekend out of respect for the still grieving community of Newtown, Connecticut. The show is slated for Stamford, just 40 miles from the Newtown shooting site. Westchester Collectors, Inc. is putting on the show.

Shannon Watts, founder of One Million Moms for Gun Control, agrees with Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia that the timing of the show is too soon.

“The idea that life has already returned to normal for the community of Newtown less than one month after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School is shocking. Newtown residents have not even had a full month to heal,” said Watts. “Allowing this show to go on without protest would be tantamount to saying, ‘It’s time to move on.’ The mothers of America made a promise after Newtown that we would not move on again from another mass shooting without action. We must join together to say that this is not acceptable: not in this community, and not now.”

Kara Baekey, of the Fairfield County, Connecticut, Chapter of One Million Moms for Gun Control said, “As a lifetime resident of Fairfield County, the same county as Newtown, I believe it is too soon for a gun show to be held so close to Sandy Hook. We are still under the microscope of the media, our children are still asking questions, and we are asking for time to grieve. Instead of hosting a gun show, we should be working to strengthen our state and federal gun laws. This is not the time to be celebrating and marketing guns in Connecticut.”

The 8th Annual East Coast Fine Arms Show will take place in Stamford, CT, at the Plaza Hotel located at 2701 Summer Street, presented by Westchester Collectors.

About One Million Moms for Gun Control:

One Million Moms for Gun Control, a nonprofit that supports common sense gun measures, was formed in the immediate aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, which claimed 26 lives—20 of them children. Our goals: 1) Reinstate the ban on assault weapons and related magazines. 2) Close gun-show loopholes that encourage private gun sales without background checks. 3) Set boundaries on how much ammunition a person can purchase. 4) Limit the scope of concealed weapons laws at the state level. Dems' ideas and laws on gun control are NOT the answer! Who do you BLAME in Chicago for all the gun violence (not to mention the government incompetence, corruption and insurmountable DEBT)??
Perhaps the U.S. should pull out of Chicago? Body count: In the last six months 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago. 221 killed in Iraq AND ^^^ Chicago has one of the strictest gun laws in the entire US. ^^^ ^^ The leadership in Illinois - all Democrats. ^^ President: Barack Hussein Obama Senator: Dick Durbin House Representative: Jesse Jackson Jr. Governor: Pat Quinn House leader: Mike Madigan Atty. Gen.: Lisa Madigan (daughter of Mike) Mayor: Rahm Emanuel Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago. Of course, they're all blaming each other. Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any! Chicago school system rated one of the worst in the country. Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any! State pension fund $78 Billion in debt, worst in country. Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any! Cook County ( Chicago ) sales tax 10.25% highest in country. Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any! This is the political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois. And he, and Malloy, are going to 'fix' "gun violence," and politics for us???

Emotions don't make common sense decisions, which is apparent by your reply to Jim. So i'm assuming youdon't like guns and are against people owning them? How are you going to protect your children if someone breaks in your home? Because if you can't protect your own children, you are a failure of a parent and mother.
sebastian dangerfield January 5, 2013 at 10:15 pm
here we go,
If children kill themselves, or harm others with guns that are in the house, is that being a good parent? How many people each year are killed , only because they owned a gun? Either suicide, the fact that an intruder pulled the trigger only after seeing a gun, or kids who accidentally find their parents weapons -- we certainly know that Adam Lanza tried to purchase his own gun unsuccessfully, so he used his mother's gun. its a mistake to consider guns as only positive in one's home. They are a danger. Ive been a soldier --and never had a gun in my house-and my kids were ok.... To tell parents that they should have a gun in a house full of kids, in order to be safe--is crazy dishonest. One time a gun advocate will take the time to explain why england has much tougher gun laws--far far far fewer guns, and there were only 39 gun murders in 2009 compared to 9,000 in the United States. When I hear that explained, then Ill start listening. Until then, Ill just be bored with the 'people kill-guns dont---its my 2nd amendment -and fears of a tyrannical govt or home invaders.

Clearly these mothers fail to realize that this show is primarily about 1800's militaria, and other antique and collectible items.

Yes Siwanoy, training is everything. I am glad we have veterans ad police officers that can bear arms too. All gun owners should aspire to and b required to achieve comparable skills. We would be much safer.

They ONLY listen in when they hear money or votes,

Dan sounds like Rachel Maddow or Chris Matthews, or Keith Olberman, or Ed or some other verbal bully trying to impose their socialist agenda on citizens who have done no wrong.
Alethiologist January 6, 2013 at 02:06 am
We ar already too far left of the middle of the road. Now these socialists are he'll bent to drive us over the debt cliff, strip our children of their financial security and disarm everyone who objects to their insidious attempts to screw the Constitution.

Well. I'm married with two young children, and I'd rather have my kids play at the "radical feminist control freak" house where I know my children would be safe. Your kind of mom has Stockholm Syndrome, if you even know or understand what that is. The kind of mom who bows down to a husband like Taliban women bow down and obey in Afghanistan. The kind of mom that doesn't consider her child's safety when her husband insists on having assault rifles in the house, where the kids can play with them, and even go shooting with good old dad. If you are THAT mom, a Taliban mom, I only pray you don't have any kids birthday parties at YOUR house. I mean really. Someone needs to warn your neighbors.

A gunman who barricaded himself inside a townhouse after killing three people in the home was shot to death by police on Saturday in Aurora, Colorado, the same Denver suburb where 12 people were slain in a movie house massacre last July, police said.
Over 4 million and counting assualt weapons have been sold since the shooting at Newtown while Congress prolongs the ban. This is how they stimulate the economy. The ban should have happened the day of, it will be months before a ban is in place. By that time, it too late.
sebastian dangerfield January 6, 2013 at 04:46 am

I dont think congress prolonged the ban. they let it lapse. And this was a domestic incident...not really the best example of where gun laws would work.
AnthonyL January 6, 2013 at 05:37 am
You crazy women can do nothing to take my guns / limit my ammo nothing and if the law passes , which it won't you will see what happens in this country ! You have no idea ... A Taliban mom ? You are crazy ! There's no first amendment without the first ! And you'll see , take our guns and well take back your right to vote ! and then you'll have no choice tO bow down to your husband for the 2 of you 1 million moms that have husbands !! Just make sure you know what your fighting for idiots !

Cross posted from OccupyColumbus:
When dealing with violence we have to keep in mind that we are talking about a multivariate problem whose solution(s) cannot be covered in a couple of Facebook posts. Now, in the context of gun control a few points are worth noting: - We need to abstain from the extremes (no one is advocating banning all guns) and favor reasonable changes that will produce a safer society - To counter a famous NRA phrase we could say 'People don't kill lots of people, people with automatic guns kill lots of people'. Even this phrase needs more qualification. - With regard to all the other facts, arguments, and correlations, I found these links (and comments) instructive http://www.slate.com/blogs/crime/2012/12/16/gun_control_after_connecticut_shooting_could_australia_s_laws_provide_a.html http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2012/jul/22/gun-homicides-ownership-world-list http://www.asymptosis.com/guns-murders-and-the-rule-of-law-running-the-numbers.html - In the end it really boils down to our (your) vision of the future and the direction we want to set for ourselves - a nation where one person's rights to own a gun is balanced by another person's rights to live in a weapons free environment and not be so terrified of their fellow citizens all the time. This is after all the land of the free and home of the brave.......

@ Sebastian- You can not use England as an example. England is an island. It exponentially harder to import guns. America is connected to Mexico. It's a pipeline for guns and drugs.
As for guns being used inside the home of the gun owner. Responsible gun owners ALWAYS have their guns in safes or on their person. My father owned guns my entire life. Never once was it left laying around for me to look at let alone touch. When I was old enough, he put me into scouting and taught me gun safety. Not for me or our family. Incase I walked into another home where the owner was not responsible. As for your England explanation, there, you got one. And it's the truth. You won't believe it, but that's how it is.
Here we go January 6, 2013 at 10:26 pm
It's a false sense of everything. Getting rid of legal guns does not get rid of illegal ones...it's an emotional reaction.
Dan Garrett January 6, 2013 at 10:31 pm
These moms are courageous, they know the NRA kills our children.

Well then by that reasoning GM, ford and every other car company kills teenagers and babies too. Ignorant comment.

There were 11,493 firearm homicides last year. Let's compare that to 16,979 non firearm homicides using bats, knives, sticks, and rocks. Autos accounted for 34,485 deaths. Shall we now eliminate cars? After all,we must end "Car Violence". Vehicles are deadly weapons, and account for three times as many deaths. If you want to save lives, eliminate cars first, it's one of the ten big killers. Drug abuse accounted for 25,500 deaths. Medical errors contributed to 195,000 deaths, over 16 times more deaths than guns. Shall we ban the medical profession?
Have all you gun grabbers studied DEMOCIDE? That's what happens to innocent civillians when a tyranical government that is successful in disarming them. Death by government against unarmed populations account for more murders than all the wars combined. The 2nd amendment was not written to guarantee the right to hunt, it was written to guarantee the safety for Americans against the possibility of a future tyranical government. Those who advocate the elimination of the 2nd amendment, advocate GENOCIDE, DEMOCIDE, and DEATH by GOVERNMENT. The foundation of DEMOCIDE, is GUN CONTROL.

Ella I know this may take you by surprise is in fact Gloria Steinhem is full of hatred and vitriol for any woman who disagrees with her liberal views. She is a hypocrite. If you are a pro-life woman somehow you are against women. Steinhem is very critical of Palin and yet Palin is raising a family and became governor of her state. Why isn't she proud of her? In my opinion it is all about being Pro-choice. And yet these same folks who fight for their right to end a life because it is their body and it is inconvenient have no problem telling another woman she cannot have a gun to fight off or kill an attacker. Go figure!
Dan Garrett February 24, 2013 at 05:19 pm
Teaparty commenters, most of you are on medicare and shout, government keep your hands off my healthcare. Connecticut is so lucky Gov. Malloy beat Tom Foley in the last election. Governor Malloy is brave, he said sell your 30 round magazines to a state that does not care about kids being killed, or hand them in to law enforcement.

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel not include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer a perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.
