Remembrance

Thoughts on marking the September 11 anniversary—10 years later: The victims, the victimized families, the courage of those who risked their lives and those who continue to risk their lives for us.

This week, almost all of us will have occasion to remember and to think about the unthinkable catastrophe of September 11.  Everyone's experience is different, but there is much we all share.

At this time of collective remembrance, we honor those who perished, as well as each individual among us whose life changed profoundly on Sept. 11, 2011. It’s a time to remember with fondness and respect those who were lost, and to treat with the greatest deference and sympathy those who lost them and must live with a lingering emptiness every day.

It’s also a time to recall the courage of all those who fought on that day to save lives and risked or lost their own. And it’s a time to be grateful to everyone—our military servicemen and women, our police and fire professionals, our local CERT teams, and others whose efforts we don’t always see—who have worked and continue to work to keep us safe.

Ten years later, we can see how much September 11 changed the world we all knew, or thought we knew. As we commemorate this Day of Remembrance as a community, we should take the opportunity to think about what it means to each of us, as well as the emotions we all share that bring us together.
