Celebrate National Bike Month by Contributing Your Ideas to the Plan for the Norwalk River Valley Trail

May is National Bike Month, and today we start Bike to Work Week, which culminates on Bike to Work Day this Friday.  While the weather might make it hard to enjoy biking to its fullest during the next few days, bikers—and hikers—may want to spend a little time indoors participating in one of the public workshops being held to help plan the Norwalk River Valley Trail.

If you don’t know about the NRVT, as it’s affectionately called by its steering committee, it’s a proposed 27-mile biking and walking trail that will link Norwalk to Danbury, passing through Wilton, Ridgefield, and Redding on the way.  It will connect train stations, schools, offices, retail, and parks, offering both a real transportation alternative to cars and safe recreational opportunities.  All five towns are actively involved in planning the trail.

As part of the planning phase, the steering committee is reaching out to the public for thoughts on routing, design, and other matters, through a series of workshops facilitated by John Monroe of the National Park Service.  Each session begins with a short overview presentation which is followed by small group discussions.  Groups reconvene at the end to compare notes.  The first three workshops, held last week in Norwalk, Wilton, and Danbury, were well attended and generated many new ideas.
