Smorgasburg in Williamsburg

Every Saturday from April to November, a mind-blowing, culinary extravaganza pops up at the East River State Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  And then every Sunday during this period, in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

Smorgasburg!

I had heard so much buzz about this phenomenon on the twitter, on facebook, in conversations with friends and even on foodie shows on TV.  So much so, that the word itself started to buzz in my head.  Smorgasburg.  Smorgasburg.  Smorgasburg!  You could say I was starting to get fixated.  And each weekend that I couldn’t get to it, the fixation was getting worse and worse.

Then couple of weekends ago, I finally made it.  Yessss!!!!  There IS a God!

Just a short walk from the subway station, through the eclectic Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, the scene at East River State Park just blew me away!  Right along the East river, overlooking stunning views of Manhattan, about a hundred vendors had pitched their tents, offering such an incredible variety of local and ethnic cuisines, with twists and turns in flavor and ingredient compositions, each tasty treat designed to make you go, ”Whoa! I’ve gotta have that!”

You may have already figured it by now.  Yes. It is virtually impossible to taste it all in one shot.  There is just not enough time or belly-space to do it all in one visit.  So, my strategy (yes, you may use it too) was to walk around the whole area first and make mental notes of what looks downright irresistible.  Then round two... a more leisurely one, was about going straight to those “chosen” vendors and order up my feast.  And one by one, I crossed each vendor off my list.  I tell ya,  its really hard work..... eating!

There were Bahn mi’s , BBQ, Ethiopian food, Indian food, Korean food, Moroccan food, things like Watermelon-Jalapeño-Limeade, Beer flavored cheese spreads, Iberian ham sandwiches, Mac & Cheese Bar, Columbian food, Vietnamese crepes, Asian flavored tacos, vast array of loose leaf teas, macaroons, cookies .....  you name it!

The atmosphere was charged! And everyone was talking about what they just ate, are eating now and want to eat next.  Foodie-heaven!

I noticed a really long line of people and was so curious to learn what they were all patiently waiting for.  Wanna take a guess? ......  Ramen Burger of course! The latest fad... the topic of most conversations (other than the infamous Cronut, that is).  I wanted to take a closer look at the actual burger before deciding if I want to put up with the wait.  So, I pushed my way through the crowds, to get a glimpse - my first sighting of the Ramen Burger in real-life. So...... I saw it.

It was PATHETIC-looking, people!  It was a sad, sad looking burger.  The patty was so skinny and anorexic looking.  The ramen bun (or whatever you want to call it) looked nothing more than glued up ramen noodles, shaped like a disk.  Yuck!  Sometimes, I really wonder why people fall so easily into these food-fad-traps.
