Walk on the Wild Side: Carolanna Parlato + Laurel Sparks

Amy Simon Fine Art located
at 1869 Post Road East, Westport is pleased to announce the November 1st opening
of Walk on the Wild Side:  Carolanna Parlato + Laurel Sparks. Both artists are from
Brooklyn and each creates bold, colorful and exuberant paintings. Carolanna Parlato’s
beautiful abstract paintings are based on intuition and chance.  The paint is dripped, smeared and brushed to
create visual metaphors for fluidity. Her
paintings are based on forms and colors in nature.  They are vibrantly colored, shimmering and
moving just like our ever changing perceptions of the natural world. These works mark an evolution in
Parlato’s artistic journey.  They evolved
from her earlier works which consisted of more organic forms that were created
by pouring paint onto the canvas..  The
new work has loosened up and lightened up.
These new works are more saturated and reminiscent of soaked color field
painting. Laurel Sparks creates
compositions that use a wide range of painting and craft materials  filled with hidden language and symbols.  From constellations to rhythmic patterns,
weavings of lines and drips are ruptured by early beaded surfaces and metallic
shapes. Her paintings are, at the same time, whimsical, mystical and
theatrical. Sparks’ works are filled with campy irreverence and are elaborate,
spacious spectacles. Both Parlato and Sparks
are pushing boundaries and creating works that are charged with color, energy
and excitement.  They are “walking on the
wild side!”The exhibition runs from November
1st through December 15th.  There is an opening, Friday, November 1st from
5:30 – 7:30 p.m.  Gallery hours are
Tuesday through Saturday, 11 to 5:30.
