Richard Moller LTD to Hold Open Studio: Showcase the Art of Marquetry
Richard Moller Ltd Studio will host an open studio and reception to showcase the decorative art of marquetry. The open studio will feature a unique opportunity to view a reconstructed working replica of the mysterious chevalet - a marquetry tool long guarded as a secret by French art houses.
Marquetry involves carving and applying thin slices of colored wood, shell and other precious materials with great precision to the smooth surfaces of furniture and decorative objects. Introduced by the Roman Empire as ‘intarsia’ to Europe, it was most widely embraced by royalty in the 14th century.
The popularity of marquetry has been one of cyclical growth and decline since 350 B.C. with the art itself being refined and embellished upon by restoration masters of the diverse cultures that embraced it. Although it had a brief resurgence of attention in the early 20th century, marquetry remains a relatively rare art form. In the United States, the Richard Moller LTD studio has been at the forefront of preserving and cultivating the art of marquetry for the past 45 years.
