Final Vote Count for Tuesday's Norwalk Municipal Elections

Stuart Wells at the registrar's office at Norwalk City Hall provided final numbers this morning to Patch.

An interesting figure to note was the number of total votes  "Mayor to Mayor," as in the the number who cast a ballot for mayor yesterday versus two years ago:

A total of 16,761 votes were cast for mayor on Tuesday.

A total of 14,345 votes were cast for mayor in 2011. That is an increase of over 2,000+ votes.

There are 44,326 active voters in Norwalk, not including the number who registered to vote and cast a ballot yesterday: 81

To put that number, 81, in perspective, Wells said 500 Norwalkers registered to vote and cast President-only ballots in the last election.

Is it time for the registrars' office to rest? Not necessarily. 

Wells said that when you have several candidates running who are the top vote getters and others who are far behind, "the outliers," there is not a reason to recount. However, the "in-between" candidates whose total number of votes may be close can be a different story. In these cases, if the difference in votes garnered between two candidates is less than half of one percent, according to Wells, that triggers a recount.

Wells said that races in 10 percent of the state's precincts are randomly selected by the Secretary of the State to be hand-counted entirely. This is done in order to see whether the tabulators were working correctly. In the past nothing has come of the random hand-counts but, said Wells, "It would turn up a Mission Impossible situation of someone altering the program."
