What's Open, What's Closed on Veterans Day

Schools are open, recycling service continues, but trash pickup doesn't; almost all other government offices are closed.

Veterans Day is considered a federal, state and local holiday.


The following are CLOSED today:

  • Banks—nearly all will be closed, although they may open at their discretion
  • Garbage pickup—all pickups scheduled for Friday will take place Saturday
  • Most libraries, including Norwalk Public Library, the South Norwalk Branch Library and East Norwalk Library (Rowayton Library is open)
  • Post offices
  • State offices, including the state Department of Motor Vehicles, which will be open on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Norwalk City Hall and city offices
  • U.S. government offices

  • Veterans Day is not spelled with an apostrophe, as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs explains on its website, because it is a day "for veterans."
  • Metro-North employs 669 veterans, about a fifth of its labor force.
