Thunderstorm Warning Lifted, Severe T-storm 'Watch' Continues to 10 p.m.

Norwalk is in the area that the National Weather Service warns could experience a severe thunderstorm.

Update 6:45 p.m.:

The National Weather Service has lifted its "Severe Thunderstorm Warning" as of 6:30 p.m., but its (less urgent) "Severe Thunderstorm Watch" remains in effect until 10 p.m.

In extending its "Severe Thunderstorm Warning" through 6:30 p.m., the National Weather Service also made these statements in its 5:38 p.m. announcement:

* AT 535 PM EDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING QUARTER SIZE HAIL...AND DAMAGING WINDS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH. THIS STORM WAS LOCATED NEAR OSSINING...AND MOVING SOUTHEAST AT 20 MPH.

* OTHER LOCATIONS IN THE WARNING INCLUDE... HAWTHORNE...HARRISON...WHITE PLAINS...PORT CHESTER AND DARIEN. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... THIS IS A DANGEROUS STORM. IF YOU ARE IN ITS PATH...PREPARE IMMEDIATELY FOR DAMAGING WINDS...DESTRUCTIVE HAIL...AND DEADLY CLOUD TO GROUND LIGHTNING. PEOPLE OUTSIDE SHOULD MOVE TO A SHELTER... PREFERABLY INSIDE A STRONG BUILDING BUT AWAY FROM WINDOWS.

Update 5:46 p.m.:

In the latest twist: The National Weather Service has extended the "Severe Thunderstorm Warning" through 6:30 p.m.

The extension was issued at 5:38 p.m.

Update 5:20 p.m.:

In yet another new thunderstorm alert from the National Weather Service today, the agency has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Fairfield County, in effect through 5:45 p.m.

Norwalk is specifically mentioned in the announcement, along with five other communities in Fairfield County and several in Westchester County, New York.

"At 4:37 p.m. EDT, National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing quarter size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph," the service warns. "This storm was located near Peekskill and moving southeast at 25 mph."

The alert also specifically mentions — but is not limited to — Darien, New Canaan, Stamford, Wilton and Westport.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for the area through 10 p.m. Monday.

Update 3:55 p.m.:

At 2:35 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a "Severe Thunderstorm Watch" across Connecticut until 10 p.m. and a "Hazardous Weather Outlook," also until 10 p.m., for Long Island and southern Connecticut.

A thunderstorm earlier this afternoon in parts of Danbury, Bethel and northeastern Redding dumped three inches of rain there, creating a danger of flooding, according to the weather service.

"Flood waters in these areas will slowly recede the rest of the afternoon," the weather service said in a "Flood Advisory."

According to the Flood Advisory statement issued at 3:19 p.m.: "The urban and small stream Flood Advisory remains in effect until 5:30 p.m. EDT [...] for central Fairfield County."

Update:

The National Weather Service extended the severe thunderstorm warning to 2:30 p.m.

The national weather service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Fairfield County in Southern Connecticut, including Norwalk, until 1:45 p.m.

The advisory states that this severe thunderstorm is “capable of producing quarter size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. The storm was located near Danbury and moving Southeast at 25 mph” as of 12:52 p.m. 

“This is a dangerous storm,” reads the warning. “If you are in its path, prepare immediately for damaging winds, destructive hail, and deadly cloud to ground lightning. People outside should move to a shelter, preferably inside a strong building but away from windows.”
