Rain, Thunder, 55-mph Gusts, Rain, Rain, Flooding?, Then Maybe Snow [Update]

National Weather Service issues "High Wind Warning" for Metro New York and coastal Connecticut.

Update 4:15 p.m.:

The National Weather Service is now saying that for the rest of the afternoon wind gusts in Norwalk should only reach a maximum of 47 mph, not the possible 55 mph predicted earlier.

But there may still be wind gusts as high as 55 mph in Norwalk, according to the weather service's Norwalk forecast at 3 p.m. Otherwise, the weather forecast is essentially unchanged from before.

Expect high winds to bring down tree limbs, causing power outages somewhere in the New York metropolitan area this afternoon or evening, the National Weather Service predicted in an updated "High Wind Warning" issued at 11:19 a.m.

"The strongest winds are expected this afternoon and early this evening, immediately ahead of and after the passage of a cold front this afternoon," the weather service report stated. "The high winds will bring down trees and power lines. Loose, light-weight objects outdoors, such as trash cans and deck furniture, should be brought indoors or secured. Use Extreme caution while driving, especially [in] high-profile vehicles crossing bridges and overpasses."

The weather service's specific prediction for Norwalk weather, updated at 12:25 p.m., is unchanged.

The National Weather Service has issued a "High Wind Warning" for the entire metropolitan New York region and the Connecticut coast, where wind gusts in some spots may reach 60 mph. from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday.

According to the forecasters' warning, gusts of 55 mph or more "can lead to property damage." The weather service's forecast for Norwalk says wind gusts on Friday could reach just that speed.

The weather service has also issued a "Flood Watch" for the entire area, which took effect from 7 a.m. Friday and lasts through Saturday morning. "The combination of high rainfall rates, a current snow pack, and frozen ground could result in significant flooding of urban areas, roadways, and underpasses, as well as small streams," the service warned at 3:52 a.m.

It will rain all day in Norwalk, with 3/4 of an inch to 1 inch falling. Between noon and 3 p.m. there may be a thunderstorm. Winds of 11 to 14 mph will pick up during the day until a 22- to 25- mph breeze comes through with the higher gusts.

There is a 40 percent chance of precipitation in the evening, with rain turning to snow from 9 p.m. to midnight. No precipitation is expected during the day on Saturday, and the temperature is expected to reach a high of 35 degrees, with a west wind of only 6 to 11 mph. There is a 40 percent chance of snow on Saturday night, with the temperatures reaching a low of 29 overnight and even less wind.
