POLL: Major Postal Changes Will Slow Service

Come spring, the postal service will no longer accomplish next-day delivery, according to the Huffington Post.

Say what you will about "snail mail" but we've all had the experience of rushing a birthday card or letter to the post office to discover — whew! — it made it to the desired destination the very next day.

Budget cuts designed to stablize the postal service, which is facing bankruptcy, would reduce by half the country's 500 processing centers and save an estimated $3 billion.

First-class mail in the contentinental U.S. typically takes one to three days to arrive, but the changes would lengthen that to two to three days. Magazines and other periodicals would also come under the changes, taking between two days and nine days for delivery.

Earlier this year, in another move cut its budget, the that it would be conducting studies on 3,700 retail offices across the country, including the Glenbrook office in Stamford and two offices in Bridgeport, to see if customers could instead be served by Village Post Offices, which are operated by local businesses.
