Norwalk Firehouse Construction Project Nearing Completion

The project has not gone over budget and will be completed by June.

A new three-story, 30,000-square-foot firehouse in June will replace the former “outdated” Charles A. Volk Fire Station, which was built in 1963.

With a 30 percent population spike over the last 50 years in Norwalk, the Norwalk Fire Department has also grown, according to NorwalkCT.org.

The former headquarters, which was located at 121 Connecticut Avenue until its demolition in 2012, no longer met the public safety needs of the city, according to the city's website.

The finishing touches are being put on the new fire headquarters.

Items to be completed:

  • Window installation
  • Masonry work on the west end of the building
  • Hang suspended ceilings
  • Install light fixtures
  • Install overhead doors
  • Hang historic fire bell (forged in 1882) in the atrium
  • Install technology
Norwalk’s new technology includes “grant funded video displays to aid emergency management and a video conferencing system available for all local and regional partners to participate in meetings and presentations remotely,” the website states.

A 2-inch thick slab of steel from the World Trade Center was installed on the apparatus floor -- a ‘cornerstone’ of the department’s training wall, according to the city’s website.

“We are proud to display it and feel it is fitting to connect it to our training wall as a reminder to all who serve in the station of the sacrifices made by 343 of New York’s Bravest,” the website states.
