Norwalk Bridge Failure Not a First

Sunday's bridge malfunction was not unprecedented: the 115-year-old bridge failed earlier this year.

Residents familiar with the 115-year-old railroad “swing bridge” that crosses Norwalk Harbor know that it has malfunctioned in the past, , resulting in major delays on Metro North’s New Haven Line yesterday and minor delays earlier today.

According to a report in the Stamford Advocate, the WALK bridge, located between the South Norwalk and East Norwalk stations, opened to let a boat pass through but then couldn’t close for more than three hours due to a mechanical problem.

According to the Advocate report, “hundreds of train passengers were taken by bus between South Norwalk and East Norwalk to transfer to trains.”
