Navy SEAL from Stamford Killed in Afghanistan [Update]

Update 5:47 p.m.:

Stamford's Mayor Michael Pavia has issued a press release in which he offers his condolences to the family and friends of Brian Bill.

“On behalf of the City of Stamford and its residents, it is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of Brian Bill, a Stamford native and Navy Seal who died in the helicopter crash in Afghanistan over the weekend," Pavia said.

"The city also extends its sympathies to the families of the courageous and dedicated military personnel who also perished in this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers remain with all of the families during this very difficult time. We sincerely appreciate the sacrifice that Brian and his fallen comrades have made for their fellow man and country.”

Update 4:12 p.m.:

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's office has released the following statement from the governor on the death of Brian Bill:

"While I cannot independently confirm the death of U.S. Navy SEAL Brian Bill from my hometown of Stamford, I understand that his family has been notified and released their own statement about him. My wife, Cathy, and I extend our condolences to his family, and our thoughts and prayers go out to them at this difficult time."

Former Trinity Catholic High School athlete and Navy SEAL Brian Bill was killed in a Kabul, Afghanistan helicopter attack this weekend, according to a report in The Advocate of Stamford.

Bill was a notable athlete and Eagle Scout when he lived in Stamford, having graduated from Trinity Catholic in 1997.

Those who knew Bill said that it was apparent from Bill's youth that he would become a Navy SEAL. Bill was one of thirty-eight fatalities in the helicopter crash.
