More Than 6,000 Norwalk Residents Without Power

High winds cause significant damage in area, leaving many without power.

With Hurricane Irene bearing down on Norwalk, the Office of Emergency Management is reporting that more than 6,000 residents are already without power. The eye of hurricane is expected to hit the city around 11am and that number is sure to rise.

"We ask that people be patient," said Michele DeLuca, deputy emergency manager. "They should call their utility company. Our first priority is clearing the roadways and making sure everyone is safe."

DeLuca added that it could be several days before power is restored to residents who have lost it. She also reported that there have been numerous calls about fallen trees and structural damage to buildings, which the city is currently working on. DeLuca recommends that residents with trees down should call 203-854-3200.

Unlike several neighboring towns, Norwalk does not currently have a curfew, but the Office of Emergency Management recommends that residents stay in and off the roads."It's still very dangerous out there," said DeLuca, knowing that the eye of the hurricane has yet to hit. "People should stay in and the ones out there can seek shelter at Brien McMahon High School."
