Hope Fading Norwalk Will Host U.S. Olympic Event
City's parks director recommends against hosting the two-day event because it will require Calf Pasture Beach to be closed for six hours each day; the closing of city streets.
It appears less likely that Norwalk will be hosting the U.S. Olympic Committee’s 2012 Youth & Junior National Championship in August due to concerns over the level of disruption the event will cause, including the temporary closure of city roads and .
According to an article in The Hour of Norwalk, the city's parks director has recommended against hosting the two-day event, which attracts more than 700 participants, on the weekend of Aug. 11-12 because it will require Calf Pasture Beach to be closed for six hours each day; the closing of city streets; and potentially conflict with two other triathlon events, the and the Trifitness Women's Triathlon & Duathon, which are scheduled near the event.
What’s more, the event would cost the parks department $8,000 to $10,000 in lost revenues.

On the flip side, a USA Triathlon official quoted in the article estimated the event would bring $500,000 to Norwalk in the form of hotel lodgings, dining and other economic impacts.
USA Triathlon officials may still consider Norwalk as a location for next year's championship, but they’re also looking at other locations, according to the article.
