Historic Norwalk Houses Up For Sale

Both houses have seen alterations and additions over the years, but are nevertheless considered historically significant by the Norwalk Preservation Trust.

Two of Norwalk’s oldest houses — the Thomas Hyatt House on Willow Street, originally built in 1677, and the Barnum-Hanford House on Strawberry Hill Avenue, originally built in 1675 — are up for sale, according to an article in the Norwalk Hour.

Both houses have seen alterations and additions over the years, but are nevertheless considered historically significant by the , a non-profit that works to protect Norwalk’s historic buildings. Working with the homeowners, the group recently organized public tours of the residences, according to the article.

The Thomas Hyatt House is described as a “saltbox-style house” that “has been altered over the years, as evidenced by the modern bathroom, aluminum siding, dormers and sun room.”  But the “fireplaces, hardwood floors upstairs and even exposed unhewn timbers used in the framework” are all original, the article states.

The Barnum-Hanford House saw a major renovation in the 1750s, but the original post-and-beam construction and other features remain visible, according to the article.

A listing with William Raveis Real Estate says the Barnum-Hanford House is a “rare survivor of the Burning of Norwalk in 1769 and an eyewitness to 3 centuries of Norwalk's rich history and development."
