Five Things You Need to Know About Norwalk: May 5

Cinco de Mayo, State Budget, Electrical Safety, Foreclosure Help and Senator Bob Duff Awarded.

1. Feliz Cinco de Mayo! Here are some fun events going on in Norwalk...

  • is getting in the spirit with free margharitias from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • is hosting an indoor/outdoor party full of Mexican specials.
  • Red Lulu is rejoicing all night with complimentary passed food, drink specials and DJ's.
  • is celebrating with a tequila tasting from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • is offering an all-inclusive Mexican dinner with drinks from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

2. May is National Electrical Safety Month. Here is another safety tip from Connecticut Light & Power: "When working outdoors, position ladders away from power lines; keep this in mind when painting or cleaning gutters. Even a wooden ladder can conduct electricity. Maintain a minimum 10 feet of clearance from overhead power lines."

3. Help is still available. Mayor Richard A. Moccia announced that Norwalk area housing counseling agencies are now accepting applications for new federal aid available for homeowners who may be facing foreclosure. Connecticut is one of five states that the Housing and Urban Development Department has approved to administer the Emergency Homeowner Loan Program. Homeowners may contact these area CHFA-HUD-approved housing counseling agencies to determine if this program may be able to help: the Urban League of Southern Connecticut at 203-327-5810 ext. 108, and the Housing Development Fund 203-798-6527.

4. Senator Bob Duff, a Norwalk Democrat, accepted the Connecticut Council of Family Service Agencies Family Legislator of the Year Award during a ceremony Tuesday evening held at the State Capitol. The award recognised his ongoing support of Connecticut children and families. Support consiting of the transition of schools to healthier green cleaning products and banning harmful chemicals from children’s products.  Preserving funding for family resource centers and bundling up on frigid winter days to ring a Salvation Army bell, earning donations for area charities.
