Five Things You Should Know About Norwalk: Tuesday, March 15

Happy Ides of March. Take a stab at attending any of these upcoming events.

  1. The Danbury Career Fair takes place today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ethan Allen Inn, 12 Lake Ave. Extension. The state Labor Department's "certified professional resume writers" will be on hand to review visitors' resumes and give help and advice at no charge. Admission and parking is free. Job seekers should bring their resumes and dress to impress. The fair will have representatives from Bankers Life and Casualty, Barden Corporation, Branson Ultrasonics, Cablevision Systems Corp., Goodrich Corporation, New York Life and Northwestern Mutual, among other companies (a complete list is available on the department's Web site, www.ctjobfairs.com).
  2. To help parents talk to their kids about drugs, Affinion Group is offering a free presentation, titled "The Courage to Speak: Seventh Annual Empowering Youth to Be Drug Free Family Night" tonight from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at West Rocks Middle School, 81 West Rocks Rd. Parents and children will have activities to participate in and listen to a presentation on preventing drug abuse. A complementary dinner is also offered.   3. "Coping with Insomnia" will be the next topic in the Medicine 2011 lecture series to be held at 7 p.m. on March 22 in the hospital's Richard S. Perkin Auditorium. Ian D. Weir, associate director of the Sleep Disorders Center and director of the Insomnia Center at the hospital will speak. For more information, call (203) 852-2250.
  4. All right: You can avoid thinking about this unpleasant subject or you can do what you can to avoid getting colon cancer—and one of the most important things to do is to get regular examinations, especailly after age 50.  is offering a free lecture at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on a new colonoscopy technique that's faster than traditional methods. Dr. Seth A. Gross, director of advanced endoscopy at the hospital, will deliver the lecture in the Richard S. Perkin Auditorium at the hospital. According to the hospital: "Described by Dr. Gross as a' GPS-like technology' for your colon, the procedure provides 3-D imaging of the colon while the patient remains comfortable so sedation is not necessary."   5. Get outdoors and do something good for our community. The yearly Keep Norwalk Beautiful spring cleanup is in the preparation stages, with organizers taking registration information for the April 16 event. Volunteers from neighborhood associations, schools, environmental groups and other organizations will pick up litter, and help beautify parks, shool yards, vacant properties and the shoreline.
