Five Things You Should Know About Norwalk: March 2

Some of the most utterly fascinating information ever written about March 2, 2011 in Norwalk, and aren't you glad you're reading this?

  1. Everybody's welcome to come to the Mardi Gras Celebration/Pot Luck Supper of the Christ Episcopal Church at  5:30 p.m. Saturday at in East Norwalk. There are special activities for children, and revelers "are encouraged to wear green, gold or purple, other costumes are optional."  Free. Call (203) 866-7442 for more information.
  2. Norwalk Police have a new tool: a DART. Short for "Disaster Animal Response Team Vehicle" (which actually should be DART-V, but let's not dwell on minor technicalities), the machine is a 2002 minibus donated to the Police Department by Norwalk Transit in April of last year. The vehicle has been gutted and rebuilt as an animal-transport machine and can be used to remove animals in disasters such as hurricanes or similarly large events. Darien's town government, which will use Norwalk services for animal transport during disasters, donated crates for the creatures. The machine is used by Norwalk Animal Control Division of the department, which is still accepting donations for equipment. For more information, contact city Animal Control Officer Richard Duddie at (203) 854-3240.
  3. The city yard waste disposal site on South Smith Street will be open today and all Wednesdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the rest of the month.
  4. The "Taste of Norwalk," a fundraising event to benefit the Norwalk Education Foundation, will be held tomorrow from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Aitoro Home Appliance, 401 Westport Ave. Tickets are $40 in advance, $45 at the door. For registration and information, click here.
  5. Reserve your tickets now for a lecture on the most awesome of subjects: Mark Twain's connections to Norwalk. It takes place on March 13 (but don't think you have a lot of time for this: Reserve Your Tickets Now). "Learn how Samuel Clemens personally touched the lives of a number of Norwalkers—some prominent, and others notorious—during his lifetime; and inspired the art of others, after his death." What could be more awesome than that? Armageddon, a world war, invasion by aliens from space, sure—but not a whole lot else. Reserve your tickets now. The event is free, but seating is limited. It's at the Silvermine Arts Center. RESERVE YOUR TICKETS NOW!
