Five Things You Should Know About Norwalk: Feb. 28

Get to sleep. Dine at a discount. Watch Brien McMahon's valiant effort. Look for signs of Norwalk in a current science fiction movie. And you've already got this year's beach sticker.

Norwalk, you really do need to know ...

  1. ... that boys in the last two minutes of their game against Westhill on Saturday night and closed a gap of 13 to only lose by two, 77-75. It was an exciting game, and nothing captures the excitement quite like video, which we just happen to have (although Kara Glover Billhardt's photos are not to be missed, either). If you don't know a basketball from a beanbag, you'll feel the energy on that court. And just look into the coaches' eyes as they speak to their teams. Just look. (And if you missed our other great video this weekend, the one where Norwalk police train themselves in making split-second, life-or-death decisions, it's waiting for you.) None of this is recommended for people with weak hearts.
  2. ... that you won't need to get another beach sticker for this year (also good for parks and for noncommercial vehicles at the transfer station). Last year's will do just fine, Norwalk Parks & Recreation Department says. They're updating the city's system for giving out the stickers and it won't be ready for this season. Eventually, they say, you'll be able to register online, and they hope to scan vehicles as they enter Calf Pasture Beach, all of which may save taxpayers money and everybody time.
  3. ... that tomorrow at 4 p.m., Dr. Ian D. Weir, director of the Insomnia Center at Norwalk Hospital, will speak about "Coping With Insomnia" in a lecture at Waveny Care Center, 4 Farm Rd., in New Canaan.  Weir will talk about symptoms and how people can learn to address insomnia through good sleep hygeine, medical treatment or both. Don't like high medical costs? Try prevention—sold by the ounce and cheaper than that pound of cure. Here are some tips Weir offers for catching some Z's:
        * Don't go to bed unless you're sleepy.
        * Get up the same time each morning.
        * Begin rituals that help you relax each night before you go to bed.
        * Keep a regular schedule.
        * Make your bedroom quiet and dark.
        * Do not have caffeine after lunch.
  4. ... that director D. J. Caruso, whose movie, I Am Number Four, is playing at the Bowtie Regent in South Norwalk, has said the high school featured in the movie was inspired by his own experience growing up in Norwalk and attending , according to a recent article in Fairfield County Weekly.
  5. ... that Westport's Restaurant Week is now. Don't let that food go to waste—and don't let those prices go to waste! For entres: Lunch: $10.11 or $15.11. Dinner: $20.11 or $30.11. Here's more information on the event in Westport. "The number of courses (minimum of 3) and inclusion of beverages may vary," according to the Connecticut Restaurant Week Web site. The event runs through Saturday. It gets better: Stamford has a two-week-long "Restaurant Weeks" program which also begain on Sunday.
