Five Things You Should Know About Norwalk: Feb 25

If it could be important or just plain interesting for you to know, it'll be mentioned here.

  1. The offers "Winter Creature Cruises" which last for 2 1/2 hours of riding in the aquarium's Oceanic research vessel. You may spot some harbor seals. The trips continue on Saturday and Sunday.
  2. Robert Doran, president of the New Canaan Town Players, presents a professional video about what goes on behind the scenes of a Town Players production. The event is part of the "Brown Bag Lunch and Learn" program of the Lifetime Learners Institute at Norwalk Community College. Coffee and cookies are available from 12:15 to 12:45, and the free program begins at 1 p.m. This year's winter session of the institute is about to end, and since the organization's events are in the large Pepsico Theater of the East Campus Building this year, they are open to the public.
  3. Not a fan of Connecticut's high tax on gasoline? Well, thank Oregon. On this day in 1919, the Beaver State implemented the nation's first tax on the stuff—at the time one cent per gallon. Other states and the federal government then followed. Now, Connecticut's gas tax is one of the nation's highest. Coupled with federal gasoline taxes, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials reports people who fill up in Connecticut pay about 63.6 cents in taxes for each gallon of gas they buy. If Gov. Dannel Malloy's proposed budget is approved, that figure would jump three cents per gallon.
  4. Up in Ridgefield at 7:30 p.m. tonight, the Ridgefield Playhouse is presenting the film "A President to Remember: In the Company of John F. Kennedy," which marks the 50th anniversary of Kennedy's presidential inauguration. The film is shown as part of the Ridgefield Playhouse Film Society's "Premiere Film Series." Tickets are $5, and you can reserve seating here.
  5. Wash your hands, smack your lips and rub your belly, baby—it's Connecticut Restaurant Week and time to put the bathroom scale in the closet. Westport is participating this go-round (and Ridgefield, too, but your stomach may start growling during the time it takes to drive way up U.S. Rt. 7). Chew over these prices: Lunch: $10.11 or $15.11. Dinner: $20.11 or $30.11. Add a tip to that and you're still making off like a bandit. "The number of courses (minimum of 3) and inclusion of beverages may vary," according to the Connecticut Restaurant Week Web site. The event runs from Sunday, Feb. 27, through Saturday, March 5.
