Five Things You Need to Know About Norwalk: July 5

Let's help keep Norwalk beautiful by picking up your cigarette butts, plus more.

  1. Starting today the will offer weekly crafts on Tuesdays. 1 to 2 p.m. for children in grades K - 2 and 3 to 4 p.m. for children in grades 3 - 5. This program will run until August 16 and is free and limited to 15 children so you'll need to register. Call 203 899-2790 x3 for more information.
  2. The first phase of reducing cigarette litter launched this holiday weekend by members of Keep Norwalk Beautiful. They placed ashtrays and cigarette buckets in the shape of lighthouses at Calf Pasture Beach. The second phase will take place later in the Summer with discussions with business owners in SoNo on how they can help reduce the amount of butts on sidewalks in front of their businesses.
  3. Don't you just love those Summer Pop-Up Shops, well here is a new one opening today at 172 Heights Road in Darien. "Find brand-new designer jeans, dresses, handbags, sunglasses and more. Open for only three weeks and closing its doors on July 24, 2011."
  4. Sunset lectures at Sherwood Island continue. The Friends of Sherwood Island State Park host a lecture series on Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. in the Nature Center. This Thursday, July 7 the subject is Horseshoe Crabs: Their Connection to Your Health and the Long Island Sound Ecosystem with guest speaker Dr. Jennifer Mattei, associate professor of biology at Sacred Heart University and Chair of Project Limulus. The lecture, refreshments and snacks are free and so is the entrance fee to the park after 5:30 p.m.
  5. It's time to register for the 2nd annual Spokes Ride. The event which benefits the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will begin at 8 a.m. on  Sunday, October 2. You have a choice of riding the 12, 20 or 50 mile bike route. Ride for yourself, someone you know or ride just because it is a great cause.
