Five Things You Need to Know About Norwalk: July 28

Rock and Read Summer continues at the Norwalk Library, plus more.

  1. “A child who does not read during summer vacation will, by sixth grade, lose nearly three grades,” according to Jesse Turner, associate professor of Reading & Language Arts at Central Connecticut State University. Well, parents, you're in luck. Join the in their . Come and enjoy "weekly live music concerts, family musical story-times, sing along movies, along with many of the popular regular children programs." Beginning at 11 a.m. every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday it is sure to get the kids pumped to read.
  2. The art work of Norwalk artist Eddie Niño has been on display in the since July in his first solo exhibit. Tonight at 7 p.m. he will give a lecture—Inspiration, Design and Technique—at the museum. Interested in what this “Best in Show” winner in the first juried Rowayton Arts Center has to say? Then you've just made plans for tonight.
  3. Birds of Prey will visit the Nature Center at Sherwood Island State Park at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Presented by A Place Called Hope, a wildlife rehabilitation center for injured, orphaned, sick or non-releasable birds of prey. "This is a chance to meet some of these magnificent birds up close and hear their personal stories of survival."

Their Grammy-nominated song Superman "became a song of healing for the nation during the Concert For New York, which paid tribute to all the firefighters, police officers and paramedics affected by the events of September 11th."
  5. Jeret "Speedy" Peterson, the silver medal winner in freestyle skiing at the Vancouver Olympics, committed suicide this week. Depression is a disease that can hide in even the most accomplished people. It's time to register for the 2nd annual Spokes Ride. The event which benefits the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will begin at 8 a.m. on  Sunday, October 2. You have a choice of riding the 12-, 20- or 50-mile bike route. Ride for yourself, someone you know or for one of the millions that have been defeated by this disease.
