Five Things You Need to Know About Norwalk: August 2

Build a lighthouse for the Maritime Aquarium "Festival of Lighthouses" and win some money, plus more.

  1. is hosting its Tuesday weekly craft in the Community Room for grades K through 5. Join them from 1 to 2 p.m. for grades K - 2 as they make maracas using paper plates and beans. Then from 3 to 4 p.m. children in grades 3 – 5 will will make log cabins out of paper bags. These programs are free and limited to 15 children so please register at (203) 899-2790.
  2. The Friends of Sherwood Island State Park host a lecture series on Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. in the Nature Center. This Thursday, the subject is Global Climatic Change: Consequences & Cures with guest speaker, chemical engineer Lewis Clark. The lecture, refreshments and snacks are free, so is the entrance fee to the park after 5:30 p.m.
  3. The Tenth Annual Festival of Lighthouses Contest has begun at the Maritime Aquarium. "This special exhibit will place 24 lighthouses throughout the aquarium during the holiday season and Aquarium visitors will follow these hand-crafted beacons through the galleries and then may cast a vote for their favorite." The builder of the lighthouse with the most votes will receive $1,500. Second place will receive $750, third place $375, fourth place $300, fifth place $225 and $150 for sixth place. Entry forms are being accepted until October 21.
  4. is hosting a free workshop - with admisssion - for ages 4 and up on Friday. "Children will design, build and launch stomp rockets. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Limit 15 children."
  5. Join the on Friday, August 12 for their Starry Sky Campfire and Night Hike. Between 7 and 8:30 p.m. you will walk the trails under the hopefully star filled sky, then gather around the campfire and learn about the constellations you just gazed at. Please register. Members $5, non-members $8 and 3 or under are free.
