Local DAR Chapter To Receive Legislative Citation

The theme of the current administration of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is “Honoring Our HeritageFocusing on the FutureCelebrating America!”    The focus on the future relies heavily on promoting education and includes DAR’s commitment to literacy promotion.

To meet the needs of the increasing number of illiterate individuals, the DAR Literacy Challenge Committee was established in 1989.  In July 2007 the name was changed to the Literacy Promotion Committee to better reflect the work of the committee.  The efforts of the Literacy Promotion Committee continue today with individual chapters of the DAR working in partnership with the community to promote literacy, provide educational supplies, coordinate volunteer efforts, and raise funds to promote literacy.  Members mentor and tutor children, at-risk teens and adult learners.  Other literacy promotion activities include teaching English as a second language through classes or conversation sessions, reading to the blind, recording books on tape, reading to children, and providing books to hospitals, doctors’ offices and waiting rooms.

The Norwalk-Village Green Chapter encourages all members of the Norwalk community to celebrate National Family Literacy Day on November 1st.  Start a new book, read to a child, lend your favorite book to a friend, and donate your old books to your school library or the local community library.  Make November a month filled with reading.  Start improving your reading skills or help someone you know improve theirs.
