Make Connections that last a life time!

We often over look the simple things in our lives, taking for granted our friends and family. American's are making history by working harder and longer. And the connections in our lives, which make us feel whole, complete and happy, are suffering.
Our loved ones are growing old and breaking records on the number of birthdays they are having, as life expectancy has grown well into the 90's. Yet, this valuable, amazing generation is living among their peers in state-of-the-art assisted living and nursing home facilities, where they often have minimal contact with their own families.
As a memorial planner, I talk to bereaved families and plan meaningful memorials for their lost loved ones. But, often times, families struggle to find the unique qualities their loved ones possessed. Yes, they are grief stricken, making the thought process difficult. But adult children see their parents though children's eyes. They see the mom who made chocolate chip cookies when it rained, or the dad who gave them piggy back rides. These are important, valuable memories, but often don't give the full picture of who their loved one really was, what they were passionate about or what their dreams were. Adult children have a difficult time seeing their parents as complete adults, with a full life time of experiences and knowledge.
Because of my profession, a large part of my job is education. I speak about the value in pre-planning your memorial, and stress the importance of starting the conversation with your family members on how you would like to be remembered. There are many benefits for families working together to make final arrangements, reducing overspending due to grief and guilt, and eliminating the question, "am I doing this right?", are just a few.  Pre-planning also allows for a memorial that truly reflects the unique qualities of your loved one.
It is easy to begin the process of making your wishes known. Make time to get to know your loved one. Ask questions that are open ended and unique. The answers will surprise you! Celebrate Me Home has developed a Memorial Planning Guide, designed to gather important life stories and memories.
