TRUMBULL, CT., May 20, 2014 – The Connecticut Council for Social Studies today announced that a Trumbull attorney has been selected to receive its annual award. 

Stephen P. Wright, of the Trumbull, Norwalk and Greenwich law firm Goldman, Gruder & Woods, will be one of four recipients of the 2014 Bruce Fraser Friends of Social Studies Award. 

The award is given to professionals, non-teaching, who have shown outstanding support for the social studies and its teaching in Connecticut, according to the Council.

“It is our pleasure to honor Steve with the Bruce Fraser award this year,” said Sandy Senior-Dauer, a member of the Connecticut Council for Social Studies’ awards committee. “Steve is a dedicated and hard-working supporter of the social studies and of education in Connecticut in general, as evidenced by his vast involvement with various committees and associations throughout the state.    Like Bruce Fraser, for whom the award is named, Steve has been a tireless and enthusiastic devotee to teachers, and has shown tremendous efforts in implementing state frameworks for the subject.” 

“I am thrilled to be among the recipients of this award.  Bruce Fraser, who led the Connecticut Humanities Council, was a passionate advocate for understanding and investing in Connecticut’s heritage and was devoted to sharing Connecticut’s history. I hope to further his vision for this important aspect of our curriculum,” Wright said. 

Over the years Wright has represented superintendents, administrators, teachers, students and parents on issues including termination, expulsion, graduation qualification, freedom of information demands, and harassment/bullying.  He was personally invested in education for over ten years as a member of the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education, a Board of Education chair and member in the Town of Trumbull and a delegate for the National Association of State Boards of Education.

In 2011, Gov. Daniel P. Malloy appointed Wright to the State Board of Education. Wright currently serves on the Government Affairs Committee and the Achievement Gap Subcommittee of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE). He was on the Executive Committee of the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) and was its Vice President of Professional Development. Wright recently completed a second term as the chair of the Trumbull Board of Education.

A Trumbull resident, Wright has a long record of leading and volunteering for various committees. Widely honored for his efforts, he received in 2009 the Bridgeport Regional Business Council’s Educational Impact Award.

The Bruce Fraser Award will also be presented to Denise Merrill, Terry Jones, and Dianna Roberge-Wintzell. 

The awards presentation will be held at the Council’s Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on Thursday, May 22 at the CT Old State House.  The evening will include a state history-based activity, a wine and cheese social and a dinner and awards program.
