Wilton Family Y Takes Over Management of YMCA of Norwalk

The Wilton Family YMCA will soon be taking over management of the recently closed YMCA of Norwalk.

The two organizations signed a two-year management services agreement which gives the Wilton YMCA, located at 404 Danbury Rd., the responsibility of providing senior management services at the YMCA of Norwalk "for the oversight of the current programs and the evaluation of new opportunities," Wilton YMCA executive director Robert McDowell said in a statement detailed by the Norwalk Hour.

The agreement, however, is not a merger and Wilton will not be hiring any new employees as a result of the signing, but the new arrangement does add more accountability to the current Wilton staff. The YMCA of Norwalk will also keep its board of directors.

The YMCA of Norwalk, located at 370 West Ave., closed its facilities in December, but has continued offering its childcare services at 394 West Ave. and at local schools, according to The Hour.

"This agreement will give us valuable expertise that will help us begin to set a new course for the future," YMCA of Norwalk Board Chairman Carl Cook said in the Tuesday statement.

McDowell told The Hour the Wilton YMCA will be doing what it can to expand on the programs of the Norwalk location, beginning by examining the needs of the YMCA of Norwalk.
