‘Kid Around Resale' in Norwalk Helps Families Stretch Dollars

This is a re-sale store versus a consignment store. The owners buy gently-used kids items like clothes, shoes, toys, and gear outright. They also carry new items including Melissa & Doug, and sell an array of gift items.

A recession can be tough on both young families and business start-ups. It can be especially tough for those raising little kids while also taking on new business challenges. But Maria and Matt DeVito, who opened Kid Around Resale in August, are enjoying themselves.

On a recent frigid Sunday Kid Around Resale enjoyed brisk traffic including moms perusing racks packed with seasonal clothing, including boots, winter coats and gear -- all at prices a fraction of retail.

According to Matt, the store has benefitted from word-of-mouth. As he chatted with customers -- a mix of buyers and sellers -- Matt pointed out that the store also carries new items including "knick-knacks and birthday party gifts."

"We put our life savings into this store and we're getting very good feedback," said Matt who described himself as always having enjoyed retail, customer service and people in general. No surprise he greets every visitor warmly and explains how the store works.

"We buy year-round, from Monday through Thursday between 10:00a.m. to 3:00p.m.," Matt explained to a customer. "We look for seasonal items but are always taking footwear, toys and gear. We don't take cribs or car seats."

Size-wise, the store sells up to children's 10/12.

Maria and Matt, whose daughters are 2 and 5 respectively, relate to parents looking to stretch their dollars. Indeed, the price points are low and the clothing, technically "gently-used," looked new to the eye.

Kid Around Resale is open seven days a week: Monday - Saturday 10:00a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 11:00a.m. until 5:00p.m. The store is located at 345 Main Ave., (Rt. 7, across from McDonald's) Norwalk, CT 06851 Tel. (203) 858-0329. Find Kid Around Resale on Facebook.
