Former Bait Dog with a Big Heart, Meet Mama

Meet Mama and get to know the true spirit of a Pit Bull - forgiveness at it's finest and love that knows no end.

At Bully Breed Rescue, we encounter a lot of dogs with stories that break our hearts...neglected, abused, injured...we do indeed see it all. Often though, it is the dogs most used and abused that remind us exactly why we rescue in the first place. There is no better example of forgiveness and the true spirit of a Pit Bull than our adoptable dog Mama aka Charlotte. We can honestly say it was love at first meeting - the very first thing Mama did was give us kisses and roll over for a tummy rub. How could this wounded dog love people? The answer? This is the true spirit of a Pit Bull - forgiveness at it's finest and love that knows no end.

Mama was brought to Bridgeport Animal Control, nearly dead, with wounds consistent with use as a bait dog for dog-fighting. We will likely never know who did this to her, but we do know from her physical wounds and scars that she endured years of abuse. Part of her ear was ripped off and her wounds were so severe that the vet had to make her a new ear canal so she could hear. It is also clear that she was used for breeding, over and over.

Within the few weeks that Mama has been with us, she has proven to be simply amazing.

Mama Charlotte is loyalty and courage in one compact Pit Bull package. This little lady may be missing part of her ear, but she is lacking nothing in the personality department. Her heart knows no limits. Her love is strong and true. She loves to sit in a lap and gives kisses. She has forgiven those who hurt her, even if we have not. Mama loves to give hugs, and do doggy yoga! Her favorite place to be is close to you. Mama is fantastic when meeting new people, and just wants to say hello and kiss your face! If it were not for her very noticeable scars, you wouldn't even know this poor girl was so badly abused.

Mama is about 4 years old and she is a beautiful example of the breed we love. The true spirit of a Pit Bull. When we fight the stereotypes, the abuse and the neglect, we fight so dogs like Mama will never have to fight or be used as bait again. Despite her past as a bait dog, she likes other dogs and is great friends with our adoptable guy Koda. She does best with dogs her size.

Hi, my name is Charlotte and I own two rescued Pit Bulls. If Charlotte could ever find her way to my sofa she would be welcome to hang out at place forever!

This is a perfect example of the true nature of a pit bill: loyal, forgiving, and loving. I hope she finds a forever home soon.

I wonder what it will take for dog fighting to become passé or not worth the risk of getting caught. It doesn't seem like priority for law enforcement, and there is much money to be made.

I would have no problem if those ran dog fighting were shot on site.

Dog fighting is wrong!!! Ask Michael Vick. He gave it (after he got caught). All is forgiven because he can throw a football.(But not by me).

We wonder too. We hope to see an end to dog fighting in our life time.

It just boggles my mind how anyone could be that sick and inhuman, heartless, cruel, evil(I'm at a loss for words to describe this hatred) to do this to any living thing... how,why would anyone think of even letting this happen, let alone being the cause of it???I only hope that karma is real and what goes around comes back to you 100 fold!!! Hell would not be good enough for these disgusting monsters!!! But then there are the people who matter, the ones with huge hearts who make a difference and save are most valued companions, bless you!!!!!!! It breaks my heart that Mama had to endure one secound of that horror but now may all her days be filled with joy!!! I wish they could be spent with me loveing her kisses and smiles.

Rachelle, I agree! I received an email from HSUS today saying Jim Himes, US House Rep., is a co-sponsor of the "Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition
Act," H.R. 366, legislation that will stop animal fighting. The bill would prohibit both knowing attendance at an animal fighting event, and bringing a minor to such a cruel event. Spectators fuel the dogfighting and cockfighting industries.

I feel Pit Bulls are sweet Dogs on their own. It is the certain "breed" (yea, you know who you are and you know I know. But, I can't say here on Patch) of people who abuse and hurt the dogs that make them mean. Look at what has happened to me over the years. I have been abused and neglected by this town and the system for 51+ years. Need help Need bail out. Need Love. Need + attention.

The whole world is backward with both animal and human rights. WE are a pitiful breed.

Michael Vick has done more to stop dog fighting then most have actually. All was not forgiven, he spent time in jail.

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel not include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer a perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.
