Roton Middle School Students Learn About State Government

Eighth-grade students at Roton Middle School today explored the structure of the Connecticut state government through a program offered by Optimum Power to Learn, in conjunction with News 12.  Participating in the program with me was News 12 Connecticut News Director/Anchor Tom Appleby.
Following opening remarks by Principal Joseph Vellucci and Cablevision Area Director of Government Affairs Michael Chowaniec, the program focused on the students’ exploration of the role of the state government.  Tom and I discussed the subject matter with students.  Social Studies teachers Dean Vaccaro and Robert Pennington then explained the students’ involvement with the program.  Student presentations on “How a Bill Becomes a Law in Connecticut,” “How the State Government Works” and “Comparing/Contrasting State Government” followed.   Students then participated in a Q&A with us.

I would like to congratulate all of the students involved in today’s comprehensive program about the inner workings of our state government. I believe it is important that we engage young people in matters of state and local politics and that they are knowledgeable regarding issues that affect us all, as they are the future.  I also commend Power to Learn and News 12 for making this program available to the students at Roton Middle School.

News 12 Connecticut News Director/Anchor Appleby said, “News 12 is pleased to bring educational programs such as this, in conjunction with Power to Learn, to local students.  We look forward to continuing to provide the next generation of leaders in business and government with the latest information on politics and current events.”

Noted Cablevision Director of Education Evelyn Cruise, “Power to Learn is dedicated to providing schools in each of the areas we serve with the latest state-of-the-art technology and creating a unique curriculum that is focused on enhancing learning at the elementary, middle-school and high-school levels.”

Power to Learn, Cablevision’s nationally recognized education initiative, is dedicated to integrating technology into education.  Through its “Triple Play for Education” technology offer, Cablevision provides its full suite of Optimum video, high-speed Internet and digital voice-over-cable services to schools for educational use.  These services are available free of charge to K-12 schools across the company's service area in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut.  In addition to providing the technology, Power to Learn also provides innovative educational curricula and tools designed to make technology useful to teachers, students and parents.
