Norwalk Senior Center Receives Funds for Flooring Replacemen

The State has approved funds to aid the non-profit Norwalk Senior Center with asbestos removal and the installation of new replacement flooring.

The Norwalk Senior Center is a fantastic resource for our city’s elderly residents, and it is in all our interest to make sure their facility is well maintained. Asbestos removal is absolutely essential for health reasons, and this new flooring should prove both more functional and nicer-looking for the Center and all of its guests.

“We are very thrilled that this project has been approved. I often take new guests on tours of our building, and the current floors are, frankly, an embarrassment. They should have been replaced years ago. These new floors will look very nice, and will be much easier to clean,” said Paul Palermo, Executive Director of the Norwalk Senior Center.

The Norwalk Senior Center is one of only three non-profit senior centers in Connecticut, and receives just one third of its funding from the City of Norwalk.

Palermo added, “As a non-profit organization, it is sometimes difficult for us to find funding for major projects like this. We often have volunteers come in to do painting and other small maintenance work, but asbestos simply must be handled by professionals. We are very grateful to our legislators and everyone at the City of Norwalk who helped to make this happen.

The Norwalk Senior Center is located in a former elementary school constructed in 1939. Many of the building’s rooms are currently carpeted, with asbestos tiling underneath. The hazardous material must be removed by professionals, after which new tiling will be installed. This flooring covers approximately 3,000 square feet of space within the building, including three program rooms and other areas.

The State Bond Commission voted to approve $47,750 in funding for the project at its meeting last Friday.

The Norwalk Senior Center provides programs and services for older adults in the mid-Fairfield County area to enrich and improve the quality of life for mature individuals and their communities.
