Bonding Commission Expected to Approve $5M for Merritt 7 RR Station Expansion & Renovations

Upgrades are on the way for the Merritt 7 Railroad station after Friday's expected approval.

The State Bond Commission is expected to approve $5 million in bonding for parking expansion, bridge and platform renovations at the on the Danbury Branch Line in Norwalk.

We’ve got to maintain and improve mass transit in Connecticut if we are committed to serving commuters and their employers and if we want to keep automobiles off an already overcrowded Interstate 95. Improving and expanding our train stations is one way to achieve this.

Friday’s anticipated approval is part of the 2006 “Roadmap for Connecticut’s Economic Future,” which authorized $1 billion in new Special Tax Obligation bonding for strategic transportation projects and initiatives, including up to $60 million for capital investments in parking and rail station improvements on the New Haven Line and its branches and on  Shore Line East service.

In July 2003, a third-party survey of Merritt 7 station riders found that the station–which has about seven dozen parking spaces and consists only of a platform and shelter–received “fair” to “poor” ratings for its station amenities such as the phones, news/magazine stand, and bus drop-off/pick-up. The lighting of the parking lot and lot security were also criticized.
