NORWALK, CONNECTICUT—March 27, 2013: The Brien McMahon annual clothing and scrap metal drive will raise funds this year for two causes:

The clothing drive proceeds will go toward several Parents Club programs including funding scholarships, the post-grad party, and for a special fund open to teachers and clubs to support specific activities.

The scrap-metal drive proceeds will be used to purchase new uniforms for the Boys Varsity basketball team as well as support Parents Club activities.

“The money raised for this event makes a big difference to what we can do for the students,” says Barbara Garelick, co-president of the Parents Club. “Community support is really important and we’re hoping that parents will come out in a big way this year.”

The clothing drive accepts clothing, coats, belts, handbags, linens, pillows, backpacks, luggage, stuffed animals, boots, shoes, even bicycles and other sporting equipment. “This is the perfect time of year to clean out the closets and the garage,” says Paula Yonkers and Mary Flynn, co-chairs of the drive. “But please remember that all items must be packaged in plastic bags and please keep footwear separate (shoes, boots, sneakers and sandals).”

The scrap metal drive accepts all scrap metal, but we cannot accept air conditioners, refrigerators or any appliances that contain Freon unless the Freon has been properly removed and recycled.  According to Coach Dustin, “Scrap metal includes anything made of metal, items like car parts, bikes, scooters, hot water heaters, washers, dryers, metal siding (not vinyl or wood), old fire extinguishers, nuts, bolts, copper wires, pipes etc.” It should also be noted that the school cannot accept TVs, computer monitors or sealed containers such as paint or gas cans. Coach Dustin adds, “Call if you have any questions.”

Parents can also donate their broken cell phones, tablets and other non-working electronic devices. This is an on-going program to protect the environment. These items can be dropped off at the school’s main office at any time, but for your convenience, an electronics Drop-Off Box will be set-up at the clothing/scrap metal drive. Please note that these devices should be kept separate from the clothing and scrap metal items. Proceeds from the electronic donations also go toward the Parents Club programs cited above.

All donations are tax deductible and a receipt will be provided on request during drop-off.
