Band revitalizes sounds of The Beatles

For Suns of Walrus, it's all about the music. The band's specialty is playing songs from the musical catalogue of The Beatles, but don't expect to see them in Fab Four mop tops or Sgt. Pepper suits in concert. "What makes Suns of Walrus a very cool band is that we don't wear wigs and boots, and we don't try to 'be' The Beatles in any way," said Philip DiCostanzo, a life-long Norwalk resident, who co- founded the band. "Our goal is to play the songs with the raw energy in which the songs were created, accurately and powerfully.' 

This weekend, Suns of Walrus are in concert in a show that not only includes Beatles material but other songs from that era. The quintet plays the Acoustic Café on Saturday night, Nov. 5, in a show entitled "Celebration of All Things Beatle and British." 

Band members are all Norwalk residents or former residents. Matthew DeTroy, the band's other co- founder, sings and plays keyboards, David Webster, whose son Chris Webby is an up-and-coming rapper, sings and plays lead guitar, Don Mulvaney sings and plays drums, and John Konya plays bass guitar. 

"The band came about by accident, through my songwriting partnership with Matthew DeTroy," said DiCostanzo, who plays guitar and sings lead vocals. "We began writing, recording, and performing together under the band name OF which became un-searchable on Google. More importantly, everyone kept telling us that we sounded so Beatle-like. We couldn't shake off the influence, having studied the music since we were kids. So we decided to add a few John Lennon, George Harrison, and select Beatle songs to our shows, and the crowd reacted like a match to a haystack. The name Suns Of Walrus came from something John Lennon said in 1974, when he was a surprise guest on radio station WNEW-FM. The host played him a song from Electric Light Orchestra, and his response was 'sounds like Sons of Beatle' and, alas, that's where we got our name." 

Although each member of the group has his own band or special musical project, the Suns get together several times a year when everyone's schedule is aligned. "We tend to choose Beatle songs that are a little more difficult to get right, because these guys are so good at what they do that it keeps them challenged," 

said DiConstanzo. "I generally sing most of the lead vocals and play rhythm guitar. The boys sing lead vocals as well, and have a wonderful rare ability to harmonize seamlessly." 

Previous local gigs included a celebration of John Lennon's 70th birthday and another that focused on George Harrison's contributions. Saturday's set list will include songs along the lines of Donovan,Badfinger, The Kinks, and, of course, plenty of Beatles songs. 

"The Beatles never looked back, never tried to recreate anything," said DiCostanzo. "If you want to play Beatle music in the spirit in which it was created, you must make it relevant to the moment. They were all about being 'in the moment.' That's where the power lies." Sounds like a powerful show, and a good one, too.
