SOLD OUT: "The Wizard of Oz" in IMAX Theater

Update: This event is sold out: "Those of you lucky enough to have advance tickets, be sure to come a bit early. It will take a while to load a full theater. And be sure to come in costume for a chance to win prizes, including Family Memberships to The Maritime Aquarium."—from the Maritime Aquarium website.

Original events listing:

The journey down the yellow-brick road will be bigger than you’ve ever seen – but the Wicked Witch will be too – on Sun., March 4 when the beloved Hollywood classic “The Wizard of Oz” lands on the giant IMAX screen of The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.

The 1939 classic starring Judy Garland will play one-time only, at 2 p.m., on the Aquarium’s six-story screen – in the largest IMAX Theater in Connecticut.

“We regularly show Hollywood movies on our IMAX screen on weekend evenings. ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ is showing now and it’s excellent in the giant-screen format,” said Chris Loynd, the Aquarium’s marketing director. “But we’re especially excited to present this truly beloved film in a way that harkens back to Hollywood’s golden years when cinema screens were truly bigger than life.

“It will be an excellent chance to confer, converse and otherwise hob-nob with your brother and sister ‘Wizard of Oz’ fans,” Loynd added. “Nobody should miss seeing the Great Oz on the IMAX screen! Not nobody, not no-how!”

The screening will include a costume contest, so the “Oz” audience is encouraged to come dressed as their favorite character: Scarecrow? The Tin Man? Cowardly Lion? Glinda? Toto? Auntie Em?

The American Film Institute ranks “The Wizard of Oz” as the 10th Greatest Movie of All Time, and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” as No. 1 of the 100 Greatest Songs in American Film.

Tickets for “The Wizard of Oz” are $11.50 for adults, $10.50 for seniors and $9.50 for children 2-12.  Parental discretion is advised for those with very young children: the Witch and her flying monkeys will be IMAX-sized scary!

A sell-out is expected so advance reservations are strongly suggested. Buy your tickets online at www.maritimeaquarium.org or by calling (203) 852-0700, ext. 2206.
