Fairfield artist Karen Maru will share her discovery of the remarkable former Norwalk resident Helen Churchill Candee and describe the process by which she designs and creates her unconventional fiber-art. During the talk she will discuss the how she incorporates historical research with traditional quilting techniques and how the two interests have led her to her new series, which starts with her books on Helen Churchill Candee and Anastasia, Grand Duchess of Russia and probes into issues of gender, power and culture in an unusual fiber medium.
Maru’s talk is part of the Norwalk Museum’s exhibit Beauty, Innovation and Practicality – Quilts from the Norwalk Museum. Maru’s quilted book Helen Churchill Candee is part of this exhibit. The exhibit is part of the 2011 Norwalk Quilt Trail.
